What is a trauma ?

What is a traumatism – or in short, a trauma ?

We call trauma, a real event that marked a person or a group of persons physically, emotionally and / or psychologically in an exuberant manner and / or surprisingly , lacking sense or control.

A trauma is often induced if the person or the group :

  1. has cut all outside links,
  2. has experienced distress,
  3. has felt socially isolated, abandonment, loneliness.

Sources of trauma can be numerous :

  • physical violence
  • sexual abuse
  • natural disaster
  • war
  • incidental finding of a dead body
  • exposure to scenes of violence…

and more generally by extension, to all situations where a person cannot help thinking of an emotionally overwhelming situation.

According to L. Terr, there are two categories of traumas :

The Type 1 Trauma refers to a single event, isolated, limited in time (accident, natural disaster, physical assault, rape, traumatic grief, etc.).

The Type 2 Trauma deals with a situation that repeats itself : the individual is re-exposed to the same or comparable risk (family violence, wars, secondary trauma for help professionals, etc.).

If the behavior of the traumatized person changes after the traumatic event :

  • obsession with the behavior of others,
  • hatred for his/her own image,
  • terror of everything that can remind him/her of the event,
  • feeling of loss of physical or mental capacities,
  • insomnia,
  • permanent hyper-vigilance,
  • escaping in energy-intensive and time-consuming behaviors,
  • avoidance of places, categories of persons,
  • setting up of rituals that will « rescue » him/her,

we then talk of Post-Traumatic Stress.

This behavior is much more developed than the unwary think. Set in place for years, it becomes dangerous for the equilibrium and evolution of the individual, and may lead to important physical modifications in the brain and implicitly affect the person's basic and vital functions as wall as her immune system.

The earlier a trauma is supported by specialists in repair, the easier it is to recover "prior to storm" peace and opening.

With the discovery of neuroscience, energy therapies and epigenetics, the extraordinary ability to change that lies in the Unconscious, we now have high hopes to start a revolution in the concept of trauma and its repair.
